QFIS | About Us
Tom and Mary Kate McGilvray each worked for the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) for over twenty years. Both started their careers in entry level positions - Tom as a state trooper and Mary Kate as a forensic chemist at the Crime Laboratory. During their time with the MSP, both Tom and Mary Kate rose within the Department both in terms of titles and responsibilities. Tom spent years enforcing laws and investigating cases before serving as a trainer and then as a supervisor, and ultimately rose to the appointed rank of Major and served on the Department's Command Staff. Mary Kate spent years analyzing evidence and conducting DNA analysis before supervising these functions, and then rose to the level of Quality Assurance Manager prior to being appointed as the Acting Director of the Crime Laboratory.
Leadership
In their leadership roles in the Department, both Tom and Mary Kate provided guidance and influenced policies that ultimately affected the citizens of Massachusetts. While they each found their command assignments to be challenging and rewarding, both missed the connection with the casework and investigations that began their careers. Their new responsibilities often entailed budget and personnel issues rather than conducting complex investigations or analyzing casework in preparation for court. While both Tom and Mary Kate were innovative leaders who excelled at planning, forecasting, setting objectives and determining courses of action, both missed the passion of taking ownership of a case and applying their training, experience and knowledge to directly help individual clients and cases. After much thought and consideration, Tom and Mary Kate decided that in order to move forward, they first needed to step backwards towards what first got them into police work and forensics in the beginning. So in 2007, Tom and Mary Kate formed the company of Quality Forensic and Investigative Services, LLC (QFIS).
